Wonder & Wisdom - reconnecting generations, one letter at a time

Pollyanna Montagu

In a world of instant messages and fleeting interactions, there is something quietly powerful about a handwritten letter.

That belief sits at the heart of Wonder & Wisdom, a new initiative led by me, Pollyanna Harmsworth, designed to reconnect generations through the timeless art of writing by hand. By pairing schoolchildren with residents in care homes, the project creates meaningful exchanges that spark connection, curiosity and joy on both sides.

The idea is simple, yet deeply human. Children from local schools write thoughtful letters to residents, often sharing questions, observations and small glimpses of their everyday lives. In return, residents write back in their own words  - offering stories, memories, humour and reflections shaped by decades of lived experience. Each exchange becomes a moment of recognition: a reminder that every voice matters, at every age.

I'm so excited that the first exchange will be taking place in June, a partnership with The Dower House, a residential and nursing home just outside Winchester, and Twyford School. Residents are nominated and supported by care staff, while Head of English Miss Iliffe will guide pupils through the writing process within English lessons, helping them build confidence, empathy and creative thinking. Safeguarding and privacy are carefully managed throughout, with first names only used and all letters checked before being sent.

For residents, receiving a handwritten letter brings warmth, companionship and a tangible sense of being remembered. For children, the process offers something increasingly rare: time to slow down, reflect and communicate thoughtfully without a screen. Handwriting, composition and emotional intelligence sit at the core of the experience, nurturing skills that reach far beyond the page.

Pollyanna provides all stationery and guidance for participating schools and homes, with beautifully designed letterheads and envelopes that elevate the ritual and make each exchange feel special. While the initial exchange is designed as a one‑off, schools and care homes are encouraged to nominate new participants, allowing the project to continue organically and sustainably.

The long‑term ambition is to grow Wonder & Wisdom into a national initiative-  improving children’s writing skills while bringing genuine connection between generations across the UK.

In a world that often feels divided by age, technology and pace, Wonder & Wisdom offers something quietly radical: the space to listen, share and be present.

Wonder sparked. Wisdom shared. One letter at a time.
